The psion netbook pro is unlike any of the well-known netbook brands in that it uses the EPOC ER5 operating system.  To the uninitiated, this is the earlier system of the now-popular SymbianOS, which is commonly used in mobile devices such as the cellphones and PDAs. The netbook comes equipped with 16-bit 800 x 600 SVGA color display, Intel XScale processor and 128 MB RAM. By current standards, this netbook pales in comparison with the Intel Atom-based netbooks, but it is important to point out that when the unit was released, it was considered superior from its predecessors and models from other brands. Unlike the ubiquitous XP-based netbooks, the psion netbook pro uses Windows CE. As such, it comes with a set of programs that are necessary to fulfill certain functions, such as email client, contacts manager, program editor, Opera web browser, and word processor, among other things.

While the company was caught in the middle of a “trademark war”, it managed to ship out a significant volume of psion netbook pro units. The publicity, albeit quite negative, has helped the positioning of the brand. The model was seen as a completely different device from smartphones and personal digital assistants. It has done its job in providing intuitive and fully functional design that helped users get accustomed to a device that is more than a smartphone and not quite a full laptop. As more advanced netbooks saturated the market, the shortcomings of the psion netbook pro became apparent that it had to be discontinued. The netbook is not without its shortcomings but it certainly made a name for itself because it is one of the brands that has drawn the line between netbooks and mobile devices.

Both Apple and Microsoft are hard at work designing their interpretation of the tablet computer. Apple is currently working on the Apple iPad, while Microsoft is designing the Microsoft Courier tablet. We all know how desktop computers work. Tablets are one of the few mysteries left for us to discover. That being said, which tablet will best for you? Which company will turn the fantasy of a tablet into a perfect reality? It’s hard to say at this point. There has been some information leaked on both tablets, so all we can do at the moment is look into the supposed details.

Microsoft Courier Tablet Pre-Review

The Microsoft courier tablet is a little different then one would expect, so it will be interesting to see the reactions it gets from users when it is released. It sports 2 7-inch colored screens, which will cause it to resemble a book, or a really cool day planner. It combines gestures, a multi-touch commands, AND a stylus pen. Yes you read right, a stylus pen. Some believe that the pen interface belongs in the tablet pc era, but not in the touch interface devices. The pen interface obviously has its pros and cons. It is also going to be one of the main differences between the courier and the apple tablet.

As far as the hardware goes, it has been reported the Microsoft courier tablet will run on Microsoft’s Windows 7. Also the courier will have a built-in camera on the back, and Wi-F. That’s about all that we know about the courier, and from the rumors that have surfaced, is seems that the world can expect "mid-2010" delivery. While it does look attractive, the controls and interface seem to lack the intuitiveness that defines Apple’s products. The gestures and motions seemed strange and not natural from the videos. Lots of funny tapping, throwing items, cutting them out and other strange motions. Whereas Apple’s products work on intuition, it appears that you will have to read the manual carefully to figure out which gestures are appropriate to get stuff done on the courier. Perhaps this isn’t going to be an issue at all, only time will tell.

It has been said that the Courier is "almost the exact opposite of what everyone expects the Apple tablet to be." No one knows for sure what the apple tablet will actually look like. We have never seen a full sized prototype leaked to know for sure. All we have to go off of again are rumors and a few blurry pictures that back them up. As far as the world knows, the apple tablet may not even exist, though with Microsoft hard at work on the courier, Apple may be forced the join the tablet race whether they want to or not.

Apple Macbook Touch Tablet Pre-Review

The Apple iPad tablet is assumed to be a bigger iPod touch with a 9- or 10-inch multi touch display, an iSight camera, with Wi-Fi and of course, 3G capabilities. It with either be running the iPod OS or more likley a version of Mac OS X like Snow Lepoard which apparently already has some touch screen capabilities built in to the code. However, Apple’s products always seem to work better with other Apple products. Your ipod syncs to your Mac, your Mac syncs to your .Me account, your .Me account will sync from anywhere online. While convenient, it can also be annoying for those who like more freedom. A la “Jail breaking” your iPhone or iPod touch. We are quite excited about the number of ipad cases, ipad covers, and other accessories for the iPad that are coming out in the near future!

Let’s pretend for a moment that both devices are for sure coming to a store shelve near you. What will be the result of the Courier Vs. apple tablet batter? If you have seen Apple’s “get a mac” ads, you will laugh when you see what the apple iPad touch tablet is rumored to look at. It looks like a sleek, cool looking device that will allow you to own rock band and create a movie masterpiece within minutes. On the other hand the courier has the feel of a business-oriented device that lives to create spreadsheets and pie charts.

As always, each company is going to be offering devices for two different customer types. Leaving you with a deceivingly tricky question: PC or mac?

I had an HP ZD8000 laptop that I suffered through for 3 Years. It was everything the Lenovo isn't. The HP was big, Heavy, noisy, hot to the touch, hard on the eyes, and unreliable. After the HP developed the "jailhouse bars" vertical lines on it's display and HP customer service blew it off, it was time to look for something better. Firstly NO HP PRODUCT, EVER. The Lenovo came the closest to what I wanted. The 10 inch display is more usable than the dim fuzzy 17 incher on the HP. The keyboard is very comfortable for long sessions. The S10 weighs in around 3 pounds. The 3 cell battery handles my portable needs. For the semifixed needs a Targus AC/DC/car power converter does the trick. The Targus powers it in the car, where I mate the S10 with a Delorme USB GPS receiver and navigate with Street Atlas. My main use is genealogy. The S10 runs all the programs just fine. The Master Genealogist requires setting the display for more pixels than it has and bumping up and down with the cursor. Scanning is with a Canon LIDE 35 (replaced by LIDE 100) which weighs 3.5 lbs and is a little bigger than the S10. It powers over the USB. It scans pictures and documents. It lives in the bag with the S10. Printing is with an ancient Canon BJC-80. It is small enough to take along, when needed. Windows XP is a real plus. I fought with Vista on my wife's new Toshiba laptop. Windows 7 will no doubt be worse. XP rules! Broadband connection is by an ATT Ultra Express modem. A USB modem would probably be the way to go today. I have used the S10 for close to 2 years. The new smart books might replace it. The S10 and a cell phone are more user friendly. The S10 and scanner take up less room and weigh less than the HP 17 inch by itself. It goes everywhere. A real portable office. The only improvement that would make the S10 better is lower cost. It is already a bargain.

This is a well made laptop - it is not real fast, but it is real inexpensive. - It has a ton of hard disk - the keyboard is small enought that I some times mistype but it runs big applications from my recliner and I mess with it 2 to 4 hours a day.

First thing's first: when it comes to netbook shopping, you have a LOT of options. Asus, Acer, Lenovo, HP, MSI, Samsung -- to name a few -- have all thrown their hats into the game (seems Apple is the only holdout). So it can be a little bewildering to someone who's looking for a $300-$400 machine and doesn't know where to start. The Lenovo S10 is a solid choice for a bunch of reasons. I'll start with the least important: aesthetics. It's (for the most part) a solidly-built little unit, and it looks great in black or white (or one of the other funky color combos around). It feels sturdy and substantial, the screen is bright and attractive, and the trackpad, while small, is well-placed and responsive. [One minor note about build quality: the cool silver circles on either side of the S10 can pop off if it suffers a drop/bump, making it look much less pretty than it is. So be careful.] As for performance, if you go with the default, $300-400 model, you're probably going to be getting a 1.60 Ghz Intel Atom processor, which is fine for word processing, web surfing, some light (emphasis on LIGHT) photo editing and retouching, music management, and so on. However, I've done some video encoding on this thing (inserting subtitles and the like), and boy does it chug. I mean, it'll get processor-intensive tasks done, but it'll take its sweet time. One really nice thing about the S10 is that adding a stick of RAM (HIGHLY recommended -- and cheap ($25)) and swapping the HD is a breeze. The bottom of the netbook opens easily, and you have immediate access to all its yummy innards. A couple of issues bother me though: The first big fault with this device is (1) its wonky wireless card which occasionally loses a signal for no reason. I've tested every element of my home network (running a D-Link DIR-655 router and serving a NAS and two laptops, including this one), and the fault lies squarely with the S10's default wireless card. The second is (2) it gets hot. The fan turns on, and it gets a little loud for so small a laptop. Don't get me wrong, it's not irritating-loud or noticeably loud, but if you're in a small, silent room, you'll hear it (and feel it if it's on your lap). All that being said, if you're in the market for a cheap netbook that gets the job done, the Lenovo S10 is as good an entry as any other. Add a stick of RAM, and you can easily get it running dual boot. I've played with the MSI Wind (and got one for my sister for Christmas) and the Eee (a friend has it), and the S10 feels just a smidge better than both. But ultimately, your best bet is to play with each and decide then.

Having first purchased a Dell 9 inch and having to return it because the wi-fi did not work, I thought a little larger screen would be better. I am very satisfied with the Lenovo 10 inch netbook. I use this as a computer away from home. Light weight and great for travel.

I looked at several brands of netbook before deciding on the Lenovo. I am very happy with my decision. While the keyboard is slightly smaller than other 10" netbooks, it is certainly usable with a little adjustment (I am a touch-typer). The only bothersome oddity is the right shift key, as others have mentioned. That being said, the feel of the keyboard is much better than others in my opinion. In addition a new model is out now (the S10-2) with a better keyboard layout. The place where the Lenovo shines above others, in my opinion, is in its fit and finish. Others seem to lack the attention to detail that this model has. For example, the keyboard on the HPs (I saw this several times) is mounded up on the left side and the shiny plastic over the screen is rippled. Annoying. And a lot of times the Asus keyboards registered false (or no) keystrokes. The MSI Winds like to tip over backwards. But the Lenovo is pretty solidly built, and it looks tastefully subdued like a good business machine should. Pretty nice if that's your thing. I found that it's processor and hard drive are plenty fast for me even with "only" 1 GB of RAM installed. But I'm not a gamer and don't care to watch videos on it, so I don't really push the limits. The screen is pretty nice and is the full 1024x600. The model I received included the Splash Top quick boot OS. This allows you to boot an appliance-like OS which has a browser (a rebranded and stripped down Firefox 2) a media player and a few other tools. It's nice but it disables features like plugins for the browser, or the ability to download files, so there are limits to what you can do with it. Great if you want to check news & weather or quickly get directions on the way out the door. If you're interested, here's how the hard drive was partitioned: 115 GB primary partition formatted FAT32 contained the Windows XP OS. I'm pretty sure FAT32 was chosen instead of the newer NTFS because it allows Splash Top to access media files you have obtained and stored using Windows. A second 30 GB partition formated NTFS shows up as drive D: in Windows, and there is a 3rd partition (hidden in Windows) used to store disk images for the One Key Restore system. I wanted to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix, but the manual advises not to mess with the 115 or 15 GB partitions because it may cause the One Key Restore to stop working. So I decided to use part of the 30 GB partition to install Ubuntu. This actually seems to work out pretty well because Ubuntu has no problem easily accessing the FAT32 main partition natively. So you can store all your music, movies, photos and working files on this large partition and use them either in Windows or Ubuntu. Makes for a pretty good setup. The install of Ubuntu was painless. Just follow the instructions on the Ubuntu site and it does pretty much the rest for you. Networking, sleep and hibernate, screen brightness and volume and all the other function keys worked without having to do any tweaking. Only the internal mic needs some help to get working, but instructions are available if you look for them on the web. The nice think about UNR is that it makes really good use of the limited screen area on these smaller computer. It also boots faster than Windows and seems generally snappier. I would certainly recommend this model to anyone in the market for a netbook.

With Netbooks being so small in size, they are prone to abuse. HP has a solution for this problem by building both their HP mini laptops on a solid magnesium alloy chassis. The Hp mini 2140 impressively sports one of the larger keyboards on the low cost netbook range. It is 29% the size of a standard keyboard, making adapting to a smaller computer a little either. It even has a full sized shift key on the right side of the keyboard. Also, the keys are protected with Hp Durakeys. Durakeys is a clear coating that protects the finish as well as the printed characters on the keys. This allows the keyboard to look new even after years of heavy typing.

I loved the concept of a netbook because I'm a writer who just needs basic word-processing, web and portability. Oh, and affordability -- I don't like paying $1900 for a tiny version of a Sony vaio. I first tried buying a 9" Asus, which was astonishingly portable -- but it was way too small to be practical, so I gave it to my 7 year old niece. I then got an Acer Aspire One that had a better keyboard but which still was slightly too small. The niece will get this one too. The HP 1000 series struck me as having the perfect keyboard, and I decided to get the 2140 because it has a classy aluminum case and some ruggedness. It's taken me a while to get used to the smaller screen. But I've finally started using it and adjusting to it. And it's giving me all the basic functionality I need, with great portability and the kind of aesthetics that make you proud to own it.

After install Vista business with the DVD shipped together, there are no default drivers to connect to the network and to display in the claimed resolution. Took me one day to get it work by downloading the drivers from the web, and upgrade the OS to the latest patches. 1024x576 resolution is also a problem for some software --- It is not with enough width. When installing or running some software, the 'OK' and 'Cancel' buttons are 'below' the viewable screen. you just have to use the tab key and guess when you may hit 'OK' to continue. And some software (e.g. VPN) just refuse to be installed to this PCs with this kind of resolution. Also, is $500+ price too high now?

This is a feature rich netbook that comes in an extremely mobile and easy to carry form factor. The keyboard is not cramped feeling, I love the WiFi N and especially love the ExpressCard slot. I've already used my Verizon KPC-680 ExpressCard for easy access on the road. The netbook is a little pricey compared to other netbooks, but, the features are there to validate the expense. For power users, this is the one to buy.

Short answer: Great little computer Granted, given the size, a NetBook isn't for everyone. But this computer gave me everything I had in my $1,000 laptop, in a MUCH smaller, cheaper package. Keyboard size is excellent, speed is fantastic for word processing, emails, spreadsheets, etc. I got the upgraded screen w/higher resolution and the 6 cell battery since I travel and present a lot. Love the PCI slot and VGA port - a must for business use. Pros: small, compact, cheap, fast Cons: trackpad is small (would rather have had an eraser style mouse)

I am going to state that this is no replacement for a desktop or laptop. How ever it is a great supplementary item that is very portable and lightweight.It is a great tool for taking notes in class, which is what I use it for, and for surfing the net. Comparing this to other notebooks the keyboard is better than many others I have seen, but it is still not completely full sized, that and the fact that the touch pad is not very large is why I gave this four stars. This machine is not as powerful as a laptop and does not have the best graphics card to conserve power so the battery realistically lasts 3 to four hours depending on the power settings. It is a fun machine to surf the net with and can do many basic functions, the built in web cam is cool for skype as well. The machine itself feels solid, unlike a cheaply made notebook that would crack easily. The case feels like metal but for all I know it could be a fake metal made of plastic, either way it is solid and looks cool. Hope this review helps and good luck deciding on what to get.
