Laptop Security Tips

It is important to keep your laptop as safe as possible. In this day and age, secure laptops come in many shapes and sizes, but they are a necessity if you carry sensitive information with you. The reason for this is an obvious one; laptops are not cheap to replace. This is only made more complicated though because the information contained on your computer is even harder to replace and some of that data may be confidential or sensitive information you may not want to fall into the wrong hands. Here are a few laptop security tips to help you keep your laptop and data safe.

1) Laptops are expensive and extremely portable. This makes them a perfect target for run-by thieves. Never leave the computer unattended no matter where you are because you never know who is waiting to get their hands on an easy target.

2) You cannot always see the thief. When it comes to the computer age, not every thief wants the computer to sell; many are fine with the information. They can access the computer directly and copy this information or even access it remotely. In order to prevent giving them access, always log out of the computer when it is not in use and make use of a disk encryption program. Also, since they may try coming in through a network, make sure that you are using an up-to-date anti virus program as well as a fire wall.

3) Make your laptop heavier. By adding laptop security hardware like a  security cable that is connected to a desk or wall, you are making it less movable. A simple key is all that is needed to unlock the cable, but a thief would rather go after a laptop which is sitting out then one connected by a cable. For more sensitive cases, you may also want to make use of a laptop computer safe which allows you to lock away the laptop when it is not in use.

4) Common sense is king. Never underestimate the importance of using common sense with regards to your laptop. You already know that it is an easy target and an expensive item to replace. So you need to do your best to be precautious no matter where you are. Do not open the computer in places where unscrupulous people may be watching and definitely do not leave it unattended.

Take the necessary time to determine what type of information you will be keeping on your laptop as well as what kind of people you may be wanting to protect that information from. In the end, it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure the safe-keeping of the laptop.
